It’s an honor to recognize Sergeant Dillan Alvarez as our Public Safety Officer of the Year at the Supervisorial Leadership & Excellence Awards.

With 26 years of service in the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office, Sergeant Alvarez has dedicated his career to protecting our communities and keeping families safe. Today, he leads the East County Special Enforcement Unit, overseeing complex investigations focused on violent criminals —helping ensure Ventura County remains one of the safest places to live.

But his impact goes far beyond enforcement.

Sergeant Alvarez has been a driving force behind programs like MANDO (Mentors Against Negative Decision Outreach) and the Gang Awareness Partnership, working directly with youth to prevent gang involvement and create positive pathways forward. His leadership brings together schools, law enforcement, and community partners to support at-risk youth and strengthen our neighborhoods.

He leads with integrity, mentors the next generation of officers, and builds trust within the community every day.

Sergeant Alvarez represents the very best of public service—commitment, courage, and compassion.

Congratulations, Sergeant Alvarez, and thank you for your service to Ventura County!

On Tuesday, our Board voted unanimously to name the new Crisis Stabilization Unit in Simi Valley in honor of former Supervisor Bob Huber—a well-deserved recognition of his decades of service and leadership in our community.

This six-bed facility, set to open in 2027, will expand access to urgent mental health care for residents in East Ventura County—providing a safe, supportive alternative to emergency rooms or incarceration for those experiencing a crisis.

Bob Huber understood that strong communities are built by caring for those most in need. I had the privilege of serving alongside him, and I saw firsthand his deep commitment to expanding access to mental health care and critical support services. His leadership helped secure the funding that made this facility possible, and his impact will continue to be felt for years to come.

Naming this unit in his honor reflects both his vision and his lasting legacy—one that will continue to provide care and support when it matters most.

This week, the Board of Supervisors presented a proclamation recognizing April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month in Ventura County.

During my time as a prosecutor with the District Attorney’s Office, I prosecuted sexual assault cases and saw firsthand the lasting impact these crimes have on victims. That experience has stayed with me—and it’s why ensuring survivors have access to support, care, and justice remains so important.

In Ventura County, the Ventura County Family Justice Center provides a safe, one-stop location for survivors to access care, guidance, and resources. With over 40 partner agencies under one roof, individuals can receive support—including free counseling and advocacy—whether or not a report has been made.

24/7 confidential support is also available through the Coalition for Family Harmony hotline: (800) 300-2181.

Today, my Field Representative Crystal Stratton presented commendations to Oak Park High School students Gabby and Evelyn, Student Docents for The David Labkovski Project. Through this powerful program, they help bring history to life—using the artwork of David Labkovski, a Holocaust survivor who endured Siberian exile, to educate others about the realities of the Holocaust.

By engaging viewers through art, they help share important lessons of tolerance, empathy, and standing up against antisemitism and hate.

I started hosting Sidewalk Office Hours in 2010 when I had the honor of serving our community as a State Assemblymember. I wanted to create a simple, accessible way for people to connect—without appointments, formal settings, or barriers.

That’s why these continue today.

I work for you, and it helps to hear directly from you. These hours offer a flexible opportunity to stop by, share concerns, ask questions, or just have a conversation.

I’ll be hosting my next Sidewalk Office Hours on April 24 at the Goebel Adult Community Center located at 1385 E. Janss Rd. in Thousand Oaks from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM.

I hope you’ll join me.
